Description

PTS Insight

Forensic paper analysis can comprise several different aspects in forensic investigations. The most important application is the dating of paper. Other aspects can be the comparison or differentiation of several paper sheets of one document, the determination of the origin of a paper or the characterisation of paper and matching with other forensic traces. The material analysis of paper by IR and Raman spectroscopy can help to answer these questions. The presence of certain fibres and other substances, like filler pigments and sizing agents, can provide information on the possible age of a paper. Papermaking technologies have changed over time and the initial uses of certain paper components are well documented. Hence, the identification of a specific substance in a paper can determine the earliest possible date when it was produced. A more precise determination of the absolute age of paper produced after 1955 becomes possible using radiocarbon measurements.

Time: 10 to 11 am o'clock

PTS Experts:

  • Dr.-Ing. Birgit Lutsch, Head of Department, Laboratory Material Testing
  • Dr. Enrico Pigorsch, Project Manager, Application of Spectroscopic Methods,
    Expert for Forensic Paper Analysis

Main Focus

During the event different aspects and possibilities of the forensic material analysis of paper  will be presented and discussed. Special emphasis will be given to the use of Raman microscopy to analyse the detailed chemical composition and structure of paper. Furthermore, the possibilities for an absolute dating of paper by 14C radiocarbon measurements will be explained. The application of the spectroscopic and radiocarbon measurements to the dating of paper will be demonstrated by some case studies.

We look forward to your participation, your questions & the exchange with you.

Who is this event for?

Document examiners, lawyers, notaries, criminologists, art dealers, paper conservators, paper historians and others
