Determination of “Stickies and Plastics” according to ISO 15360-3:2024-05 with DOMASmultispec

Determination of adhesive and non-adhesive macroscopic particles in paper using NIR camera technology in DOMASmultispec

The new NIR imaging module for DOMASmultispec enables the determination of adhesive particles, but also of non-adhesive polymers, without a separation step directly in laboratory sheets of fabric samples or in finished paper. The objects are detected without contact, their chemical composition is identified, and they are classified according to material, number, size and surface.

Advantages over previous determination methods:

  • Direct measurement with NIR camera system in the dry paper sheet without additional sample preparation
  • No fibre sorting or dyeing required
  • Significant cost reduction through time and personnel savings – only sampling and, if necessary, laboratory sheet creation for substance suspensions required
  • NIR analysis enables differentiation between adhesive and non-adhesive particles as well as the identification and classification of all other substance classes of polymeric impurity particles

DOMAS NIR Imaging System “Stickies and Plastics” – Technical Details:

The DOMAS “Stickies and Plastics” NIR measurement system is a complete device for laboratory and industrial applications, consisting of an NIR measuring station and a PC with DOMAS measurement and operating software. The compact system is freestanding and all components are enclosed. The core component, a NIR camera, has a spatial resolution of 120 x 120 μm per pixel (approx. 200 dpi) and thus enables the detection of even the smallest particles in paper.

Measurement procedure:

Paper products to be analyzed can be inserted directly into the device as RK sheets, filter paper or even DIN A4 sheets, and then analyzed fully automatically. Depending on the measurement area, the measurement takes only 2 to 3 minutes and ends with visualization, quantification and classification of the polymer objects.

Evaluation:

The NIR measurement data are assigned to individual chemical components on a pixel-by-pixel basis, grouped into objects and statistically processed according to defined size classes. The results can be output in user-configurable result reports and files.
