The mass per unit area (g/m2), also called grammage, is one of the basic properties. It represents the mass (g) in relation to a defined area (m²) of a sample.

It is used, among other things, for classification as paper or cardboard and is required for calculating other material parameters such as density, specific volume and various indices. The determination is gravimetric.
