The determination of the total charge content is carried out according to the method of Katz. The carboxylic groups (-COOH) are acidic groups attached to the cellulose chains and are essentially formed by oxidation of the cellulose during the pulping and bleaching process. Another portion of the carboxylic groups is also associated with hemicellulose.
Carboxylic group determination is carried out conductometrically by direct acid-base titration of a suspension of the pulp.
